GUGLIELMO MARCONI

Guglielmo (pronounced goo-YELL-moe) Marconi, an Italian Irish inventor and electrical engineer, was born in Bologna, Italy, on April 25, 1874, to Giuseppe and Annie Jameson Marconi. His father’s family was of Italian nobility, and his mother’s family had founded the lucrative Jameson Irish Whiskey distillers in Ireland. Guglielmo had an older brother named Alfonso.

The Marconi family was very wealthy, and Annie, especially, loved to travel often with her sons. Because of this, the boys were privately educated for the most part. Guglielmo was intelligent, but he apparently did not do very well with most of his studies. He did, however, show a remarkable interest in science and electricity, and his mother encouraged him to experiment and learn.
